War Machine (James Rhodes)

War Machine is pretty straight forward – use ammo, do a lot of damage. But there are some new keywords and sequence questions that might arise during your game, so we’ll try to cover them. First, here are some keyword shortcuts that you might need when playing War Machine:

This is a list of known War Machine errata’s from the designers:

  • James Rhode Alter-Ego Action – The ability is limited once per phaseChoose a War Machine card in your discard pile and shuffle it into your deck. (Once per phase)

War Machine Rule Clarification & Special Cases

Q. Can you exhaust Gauntlet Gun to generate the ammo without playing a War Machine event?

No. You have to be paying for a war machine event in order to activate Gauntlet Gun’s resource ability. If you don’t have an valid events (War Machine events) you can play, you can’t exhaust Gauntlet Guns to get a resource and an ammo counter.

Q. Can you exhaust Gauntlet Gun to only generate the ammo counter?

No. You have to be paying for something to be able to activate a resource ability. That is why you can’t activate the Gauntlet Guns just to get the ammo counters.

Q. If you have 0 ammo, can you use Gauntlet Gun to generate a resource and ammo in order to play Repulsor Beam?

Yes. Since you first use the ability of Gauntlet Gun to generate the resource and the ammo, when it’s time for you to activate the Repulsor Beam ability you will have the ammo to pay for it.

Q. If you have 2 ammo, can you use both Gauntlet Gun to generate resources and ammo in order to play Full Auto?

Yes. Since you first use the abilities of Gauntlet Guns to generate the resource and the ammo, when it’s time for you to activate the Full Auto ability you will have the ammo to pay for it.

Q. If you have 2 ammo, can you use both Gauntlet Gun to generate resources and ammo in order to play Full Auto?

Yes. Since you first use the abilities of Gauntlet Guns to generate the resource and the ammo, when it’s time for you to activate the Full Auto ability you will have the ammo to pay for it.

Q. Does Float Like a Butterfly interrupt triggers every time I use Shoulder Cannon?

Yes. If you have Float Like a Butterfly under your control, every time you use Shoulder Cannon to deal damage to a confused enemy you increase that damage by 1, because Shoulder Cannon is an attack.

Q. Does Taskmaster remove my tough status from Upgraded Chassis?

No. Because Taskmaster‘s response is a force response, it always triggers before any other non-forced responses. The sequencing of events is the following:

  1. You change from Alter Ego form to Hero form.
  2. Taskmaster‘s Force Response triggers – you discard a card and deal damage equal to the number of boost icons.
  3. Once you have resolved the forced response, you can trigger the Upgraded Chassis‘ Hero Response to changing to your hero form.
  4. If you have triggers Upgraded Chassis’s Hero Response you put a tough status card on War Machine.

Q. Can I or any other player on the table play a War Machine ally if I’m War Machine hero?

If the ally shares the same names as the hero, you can’t play that ally. That means Iron Man player can’t play their signature ally, and nobody can’t play the basic War Machine ally. For more information, read the unique rule.
